The Anatomy of My Wardrobe

I love clothes. I think about clothes all the time. I think about outfits I’d wear to imaginary occasions. Lol.

I’ve loved fashion all my life, it’s been the extension of my personality and love for the arts. It’s been graphic design first and fashion second. I’m fortunate to be living my childhood dreams of being in both industries.

My style hasn’t really changed over the years, it’s always been simple, with a little experiments here and there, nothing much. For some reason 2020 reminded me how much I love dressing up, even though we weren’t going anywhere. SO has 2021. Could be due to the overwhelming rise of TikTok & IG fashion content, brands and ads. But I don’t really mind because it allowed me to explore my style even more.

To describe my style simply, I’d use the words; simple, classic, casual. A great mix between sporty, streetwear and minimal. But really, my style and wardrobe is just a world of basics.

My closet is made up of items I can wear over and over again, because they are mostly statement timeless pieces. Pieces I can style into SEVERAL outfits. My wardrobe is also very neutral, I got rid of the coloured clothes I had, except one or two pastel T-shirts and dress trousers.

Having a neutral closet has made getting dressed so easy because everything goes! Neutral basics are not as boring as people think. It’s actually been really fun engineering different outfits using the same set of clothes. I honestly love it here.

Also, people think I have a lot of clothes, but I really don’t. In fact, you know how people pack clothes away when seasons change? I don’t. My clothes fit in my wardrobe all year round with some space left. Really, have no clothes up (in that top top shelf) in my wardrobe.

So what makes my wardrobe you ask? Here’s a list of my top must have closet basics to have:

Good T-shirts

I have a range T-shirts, printed and not printed. Most of them are boxy, crew necks. And then I have oversized T-shirts. These are my favourites.

They range from white, black, grey, brown and some shades in between. I like to pair them with jeans, skirts, or dress trousers. Or over biker shorts.

Dress Trousers

I don’t have enough of these. Okay, I have like 6, but I’d like more please.

I don’t work in an office, nor do I dress up in official clothes but I love dress trousers worn casually. Like with a t-shirt or a crop top and some sneakers.

Black Dress Pants from The Red Shelf

When I need to dress it up, I like pairing them with an oversized official shirt and some heels/mules.

Jeans

I’m always on a quest for the perfect jeans, I have never found them. Actually no, I found them but I couldn’t fit, so my sister bought them for herself. They exist, and are in my house just not in my closet. *insert sad gif here

I do have a few that come close though, yay.

Dad Jeans from The Fixx

I love jeans, so much. I can throw them on, add a shirt, t-shirt, crop top, sweater and it is well with my soul. I’d say you need to have at least one of each style, in black and/or blue. You need a mom jean, dad jean, balloon jean, straight, skinny, super baggy, you name it. Jeans are always in!

Blazers, Jackets & stuff

This is how I usually take my very basic outfits to something actually more interesting to look at. Lol.
On top of my list are blazers, you can never have enough of these! I swear by this.

I think I have a little over ten? I’ll have to count.
But yes, you’ll need a black basic one, a white one, a plaid, an interesting colour, mine is burnt orange and then a few vintage, grandpa type blazers. I only wear oversized blazers but you could add fitted ones, if that’s your style.

And then, I have one leather jacket but I am looking for an oversized, ugly dad leather jacket too. Let me know if you know where I can get one. One bomber jacket. Two shackets, one long and the other average sized. 2 Denim jackets and like 3 cardigans. Which I don’t wear much of anymore (cardigans) because they don’t fit my current aesthetic.

I also have a bunch of knitted sweaters and crew neck sweaters. A couple of hoodies for my athleisure looks.

What I’m looking to add with immediate effect is a black puffer jacket and a floor length tan coat. *several heart-eyes emojis

Basic Bottoms & Tops

Here, I’d like to mention all my countless very basic crop tops, cute skirts, sweat shorts and pants, shirts and dresses.

These are all items I wear every other time and not as regularly as the aforementioned. They help build several outfits too, because they are also basics. They are usually one colour and unprinted, nothing too interesting. But perfect for wearing over and over without really noticing it’s the same thing.

So yeah, that’s basically what my wardrobe is made up of, a whole lot of neutral basics. I only shop things I can create several outfits with. When I’m tired of something or don’t wear much of it anymore, I give it away.
(I don’t resell any of my clothes, I prefer to give it away.)
Let me know, what else you’d like me to write about.

Thanks for reading.
